Internet is an essential part of daily life, but choosing the right connection can be overwhelming due to the many technologies and providers. Prices, speeds, and availability all vary by location and usage.

Below, you’ll find an overview of internet types, the best and most affordable solutions, and what to consider before choosing a provider. Let us help you compare and find the best option for your needs.

Types of internet connections in Denmark

When choosing an internet connection, it’s important to understand the differences between the available technologies. They vary in speed, stability, and availability – and the best solution depends on your needs and address.

Fiber – Lightning fast & stable

Fiber internet uses optical cables that transmit data at the speed of light. This means extremely high speeds (often 1000 Mbit/s or more) and symmetric speeds, meaning your download and upload speeds are the same.

Fiber delivers consistent speeds throughout the day because it’s not affected by other users in your area. In contrast, cable internet can slow down during peak hours due to shared bandwidth. The downside of fiber is that it’s only available where fiber infrastructure is already installed.

You can also read more about broadband via cable TV or get an overview of broadband offers at your address.

Cable internet – Fast but shared connection

Cable internet is delivered either via a cable TV socket (COAX) or a phone socket (DSL).

COAX internet uses the same cables as cable TV and can deliver speeds up to 1000 Mbit/s, making it a fast and stable option. However, since the connection is shared with neighbors, speeds may drop during high-traffic periods such as evenings.

DSL internet is delivered through telephone lines and comes in two variants:

  • ADSL (up to approx. 20 Mbit/s) – stable but slower
  • VDSL (up to approx. 100 Mbit/s) – faster, but depends on your distance from the nearest network hub

DSL is often the only option in areas without fiber or cable internet. It works for basic internet use but is less suitable for gaming or high-quality streaming.

Mobile Broadband (4G/5G) – Flexible but coverage dependent

Mobile broadband connects via cell towers, just like a mobile phone plan. The speed and stability depend on signal strength and network load. It’s a good option for on-the-go internet or for areas without wired connections.

  • 4G typically delivers 50–300 Mbit/s and covers most of Denmark
  • 5G can reach up to 954 Mbit/s but requires a 5G router and good coverage

A unique advantage of mobile broadband is that it can be used almost anywhere. However, the signal may be affected by buildings, terrain, and traffic on the network. In addition, many plans include a data limit, making them less ideal for heavy use.

Compare internet prices and get affordable internet

Internet prices can vary significantly depending on the provider, speed, and technology. Many people overpay simply because they don’t compare their options. By checking the available prices, you can often find a cheaper solution that still meets your needs.

Some internet providers offer promotional prices for a limited time, while others maintain low and stable prices year-round. That’s why it pays to keep an eye on the market and choose the best deal.

What to consider before choosing an internet provider

Choosing the right provider is about more than just price. At Tjekbredbånd.dk, we’ve collected helpful tips to guide you in finding a stable internet connection that fits your needs:

  • What type of connection is available to you? Not all technologies are available everywhere. Check if you can get high-speed fiber, mobile broadband, or if you're limited to DSL.

  • How fast do you need your internet? If you stream in 4K or play online games, you’ll need a fast connection with high download and upload speeds. For browsing and social media, lower speeds might be enough.

  • Wired or wireless? A wireless router offers flexibility, but wired connections are usually more stable. If you have poor WiFi coverage at home, a mesh router or 5G internet could be a good solution.

  • How is the customer service? Check Trustpilot reviews to see what others are saying about customer support, uptime, and conditions before you sign up.

What the experts say

Digital inequality in Denmark

Today, nearly 90% of citizens and businesses in rural areas already have access to fiber. This has earned Denmark a top spot in Europe when it comes to ensuring fiber coverage for the people, families, businesses, and entrepreneurs who have chosen to settle outside the big cities.”
- Morten Baadsgaard Trolle, Fiberalliancen

Extension and halving of the broadband fund

“A long-term fund is a good step, but financially, this is the wrong direction. A reliable internet connection is essential to function in a fully digital Denmark. Fewer funds to support households and businesses that are still waiting for better broadband simply means the digital divide will continue.
-Thomas Woldiderich, Head of Fiberalliancen.

Fiber is crucial for 5G expansion

"In order for Danes to have strong 5G coverage nationwide, we need widespread fiber expansion, because 5G is built on fiber infrastructure.
All roads to 5G go through a massive rollout of fiber. And 5G won’t succeed unless there’s a fine-meshed fiber network in the areas where 5G is needed.”
- Thomas Woldiderich, Head of telecom policy, Dansk Energi
